Excerpt: "your letter it came to hand thirty days from
the time it was mailed..I should like to hear all
about the gold that is found in Stowe and extent
of the mines ect. Flour is worth ten dollars per
hundred and beef is worth twenty five cts per pound
eggs are worth one dollar per dozen, we have a
division of the sons of temperance here it is composed
of seventy five members and I belong to the division
so you see I do not drink any whiskey like the most
of the Californians, the temperance cause is flourishing
in this country with the greatest speed imaginable."

Very interesting letter with many names of locals
and happenings. Date lined letter Oak Valley Oct. 28 1860.
"Quates from letter enough to run a sober person mad crazy.
There is more mean people here this fall more roudness than
has ever been since i lived here we have the lowest class of
spanish woman French & Dutch. Mr. Grey has sold out here &
will move to Youngs Hill this week their place will be supplied
by a main state family by the name of Ridoubt. Politics
run high here now only a few days untill we here result,
our folks think the republicans are gaining fast John
Stevens works for the cause as if working for life Omar is
a sound Republican but does not mention politics in the
Rockies. Also mention of Dugg Oliver on wrong wing of
democracy. Mrs. Huling visit about death of daughter. A
added note to letter written verticaly on front pages
reads In this township Brackinridge is 23 ahead of Lincoln
& LD is sixty one ahead of his ticket. The final result Lewis
will write before mailing this letter."

1 Page letter dated March 19 1857..
The writer is secretary of a company and Richard Brinn
was the treasurer, William McGowan was president and
it mentions how the last contract was for 50 feet at
$10 a foot and presently the tunnel was already 464 feet
done.There is Mention of the Pacific company ajoining the
Dayton or Clayton company. The writer wants to make a trade
for land owned by Tubbs & Todd for shares of Dayton Company.

7 1/2 X 12 3/4 inch single side of print Farewell
Hymn Dedicated to Captain G. W. Simmons and his noble crew
of the ship Calcutta of London.August 6th 1853 by
Phineas Stowe, Pastor of the First Baptist Bethel, Boston.
At the very bottom the printing reads-"Thomas Lang mate of the
Calcutta died on his passage to America. He was prepared for
the great change. His soul's anchor was case within the vale,
his last moments were peaceful. He sleeps in Jesus blessed
sleep, from which none ever wakes to weep." This item is
reinforced at back by long type stamp hinges. A folded cover
empty inside had come with this item in collection, not sure if
original to broadside but seems to fit the folds. San Francisco
March 20, 10 Stampless sent to Maine.
