1866 Overland Wagon Train Leavenworth to Salt Lake City Utah


225 pg manuscript in pencil by Dr. Carrie F. Young while traveling by wagon
with her 7 yr old son. Very Descript account of events, Indians, Forts, Shootings,
Station Stops, Trading Posts & Illustrations.
W.Simpkins wagon master(account of his shooting and arrest) Milt Orr's wagon train.

       ----The Following are Excerpts from the Diary----

"4/10/1866,Tuesday-we rode 15 miles to the house of Russ Hayes who was twice
   the trip across the plains."

" Marysville 95 miles from the Missouri River and the last town on the border
  -on the big blue-with bluffs on the north east a new schoolhouse of stone
 and numerous stores."

"5/6/1866,Reached Cottonwood Springs, is a military post of interest as it is
  halfway placed between Kearney and Julesburg, a fort building of
 adobes-quarters for 400 soldiers and 20 more families."

"Thirteen days from Fort Laramie reports of 1,000 Indians after we passed."

"5/16/1866, Old grave with the address below, a day or two since one of the party
  found an Indian grave in the top of a cedar tree. The known "David Steward
 June 1850 Williamsville Ohio"

"Sunday we had a two mile distant view of Big Thunders Braves going down North
  side of the river numbering about 400 old and young in all."
"Drove past post called Horse Shoe."

"5/31/1866, Went to Deer Creek Post. Telegraph operator said trouble at Laramie Yesterday,
  a sentry shot a papoose off it's mothers back, she refusing to stop when
 commanded, intense for some hours. Hundreds of Indian warriors were bribed with
 provisions and threat of 2,500 soldiers five days away."

"Went to Fort to fix wagon wheel when Captian Farris 6th U.S. commandeering of
  Fort ordered train to say where they were. The Corral placed under guard.
 Indians had attacked Laramie killing 40 Soldiers, General orders detained all trains
 and muster all men to help defend the Forts, this Fort only had 14 men."

  "6/11/1866,Monday-30 disaffected Morman families Danish and Sweded
 came back for the states.One Swede said last year Brigham Young came to valley and ordered
 every man to the mountains to hunt Indians, found 12 that were peaceable, on return
 church servants had siezed cattle grain and horses along with 200 head fine cattle.
 Many murders committed church was seal of death."

"One dollar toll bridge crossing, Indian came into camp, gave him a piece of cornbread."
"6/22/1866, Friday-20 miles in at Ham's Fork and South Bend Statin at 3 O'clock p.m.
  20 odd lodges Snakes and Bannocks(Indians)scattered over two miles along river."

"6/25/1866, Monday-Fort Bridger neatly built of logs and accomodations for
400-600 men. Seven letters recieved noon from the east.
Shone Indians by the hundreds around us."

"6/29/1866, Friday-(Young)Stopped at Wigwam of old Indian and traded."

"7/4/1866, The sound of ringing bells and booming guns as entering Salt Lake city."
